Based Book Sale: Alternate History

I hope the past few months have been good for you. The time has been busy on my end with house shopping and moving. While it’s good in the long run, there’s been some short term annoyance. Years of stuff to triage: pack, trash, sell, or send to Goodwill? Years of dust has been making me sneeze.

Boxes full of memories

The packing process helped me rediscover some things I’d long forgotten about:

Photos of me with people I barely remember – or would rather forget.

A box of Super 8 home movies my dad shot back in the ‘60s and ‘50s. Kangaroos on a ranch in the Outback? The house he flipped in the Ascot neighborhood of Brisbane, Qld in the mid ’60s? If I don’t digitize them soon I’ll never know.

Photos of my grandparents and even great-grandparents from over a century ago.

It reminded me of all the ways my life could have been different – or would never have been. (That was one of my grandfathers in his WWI uniform. How many times did he barely survive the trenches?)

Think of it as alternate history at the personal scale.

Alternate history stories – from me and others

Speaking of alternate history, you know that’s a genre I write in from time to time. You also know that my approach to the genre doesn’t bow to political correctness. My alt-history stories present unflattering studies of leftist revolutionaries (The Girl from Ipanema in the Year Zero), or suggest that the Twentieth Century might have been better had Germany won the First World War in 1916 (Fritz Bauer and the Courtesan of Paris).

If you’re looking for more alt-history stories that question the secular pieties of our age, you will want to read on.

I’m pleased to announce my story Fritz Bauer and the Courtesan of Paris is part of the Based Book Sale: Alternate History, going on for one week only, March 19th-25th 2025. Explore dozens of worlds of what-if from indie authors who are free to go beyond the limits set by New York publishers.

All titles free or $0.99. Kindle-focused, unfortunately (not my preference), but hopefully some of my fellow authors publish their titles wide.
